The European Parliament will host a major event on global warming and food policy December 3. The Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri, and environmentalist Sir Paul McCartney will press lawmakers and experts to focus on what individuals can do to fight against climate change, such as eating less meat.
The hearing on "climate change and food policy: less meat = less global
warming" will be held in the House December 3 in Brussels from 10.00 to
12.30 and will be chaired by Edward McMillan-Scott, Vice-President of
PE. A keynote address will be given by the Speaker of Parliament, Jerzy
Buzek. This hearing will be followed by a press conference.
The organization of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
published a report in 2006 on the impacts of livestock on the
environment "that shows that meat production is less profitable in
terms of the use of different production costs and very intensive field
emission greenhouse gas emissions and water use, compared with the
production of vegetarian food.
On the eve of the Conference of the United Nations on climate
change in Copenhagen, this event reflects the view that the climate
change problem must be tackled at all levels - in particular individual
- but also local, regional, national, European and global.
As a legislative body, Parliament passes laws community to slow
climate change. Parliament has discussed in depth the issue of climate
change in terms of agriculture, food and development policies and
present its views at the meeting of Heads of Government in the Danish
capital of 7 to 18 December 2009.
